The church is "no’ for the likes of us"; a sentiment expressed to the author, John Harvey, many times over his years of working alongside church, and other, groups and individuals in areas of urban deprivation in Scotland. Has the church then failed the poor? If so, do we wish to move towards a church for the poor? This book, first published in 1987, looks critically at the Church of Scotland’s failure to undertake a consistent, demanding and detailed analysis of the reasons why the poor are not anywhere near the church today, calling this failure not only surprising, when viewed in the light of the church’s clear purpose and immense resources, but also disobedient and potentially disastrous.

John Harvey, BA (Hons. Oxon.), BD (Glasgow) was a member, with his wife, of the Gorbals Group Ministry in the 1960s, and a parish minister in Gorbals, Govan, and Raploch in Stirling. He was Warden of Iona Abbey for five years in the 1970s, and Leader of the Iona Community from 1988 to 1995. He has been a member of the Iona Community since 1964.
