WGRG has joined the Church Copyright License (CCL)

Any church in the UK which has a CCL license can from now on report the non-commercial usage of WGRG songs (from original WGRG books) on their annual return, and don’t need to contact WGRG for permission. Please report our songs even if the CCL copy report say the song isn’t permitted, CCL is simply behind with updating their information!

If you want to use scripts/texts, or are not a member of CCL, the guidelines below still apply.
Australia/New Zealand:
For non-commercial and commercial use in these territories, permission should be sought from: Willow Connection Pty. Ltd., Unit 4a, 3-9 Kenneth Road, Manly Vale, NSW 2093, Australia.
To obtain WGRG material in these countries, contact the above address, or go to: www.willowconnection.com.au

USA/Canada:
For non-commercial and commercial use in these territories, permission should be sought from: GIA Publications Inc, 7404 South Mason Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, 60638-9927, USA.
To obtain WGRG material in these countries, contact the above address or go to: www.giamusic.com

Scandinavia/Europe:
There are more and more translations of WGRG material being published in these countries. In most cases you need to contact the local publisher for permission to use the translated text AND contact WGRG for additional permission.
For contact details for publishers in these countries, or for information about translations, contact WGRG.

A. REPRODUCTION OF WORDS ONLY (NON-COMMERCIAL)
Words only of songs, prayers, responses and other material to be reprinted in orders of service, supplementary worship books, church magazines, education resources, for school assemblies, conferences and on overhead projectors, etc.
1. Permission is granted, free of charge, on condition that the following copyright acknowledgement is clearly used: Copyright © xxxx (insert year of publication), WGRG, Iona Community, Glasgow, G2 3DH, Scotland. Reproduced by permission.
2. Where many copies (e.g. over 100) are to be made, and where funds permit, a donation may be made to WGRG/Iona Community and sent to the Copyright Administrator at the Glasgow office.
3. Drama scripts should be given the same acknowledgement as above and a donation is invited as follows: 75 pence per copy made of the script.
When the number of scripts copied is more than 10, please contact us to discuss terms.

B. REPRODUCTION OF MUSIC (NON-COMMERCIAL)
Requests may be for use at conferences, music/choir events, in supplementary hymnbooks and for use by singers or musicians etc.
1. Permission is granted on the following conditions:
a) Acknowledgement
Copyright © xxxx (insert year of publication), WGRG, Iona Community, Glasgow, G2 3DH, Scotland. Reproduced by permission.
b) Donation
When over 25 copies of a chant or over 50 copies of a song are required (eg. conference use, hymn booklets) we would invite the following suggested donation:
£12.50 for use of a CHANT – melody or full arrangement
£25.00 for use of a SONG – melody or full arrangement
When the number of copies is less than 25 (chant) or 50 (song) we suggest:
60 pence per copy of the song or chant.

Cheques should be made payable to WGRG/Iona Community and sent to the WGRG office, with title details of the songs used.

C. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING

1. TRADITIONAL SONGS/TUNES
There is no ‘copyright’ for melodies or arrangements which are traditional. But for traditional songs, parts of the song may still be in copyright (if the arranger is known, or if the original text has been translated into English). Please check the © acknowledgement next to the song to determine if it’s traditional in full or only partially. If you are in any doubt about any song published by us, contact us!
2. “FREEDOM IS COMING”

Wild Goose Publications administer copyright, in Britain only, for the South African songs in the ‘Freedom is Coming’ collection. The same conditions apply to the translations and arrangements of the collection, except that the copyright acknowledgement should read:
Copyright © 1990 Wild Goose Publications, Iona Community, Glasgow, G2 3DH, Scotland. Reproduced by permission.

3. “SIYAHAMBA – WE ARE MARCHING”
Wild Goose Publications/WGRG can give permission for the text and musical arrangement found in the ‘Freedom is Coming’ collection. The words are :
Siyahamb’ ekukhanyen’ kwenkhos’. We are marching in the light of God.
There are other versions which have extended texts and we do not recommend that those are used. However, should your request be for the use of the extended text, you must add the following information:
English verses 2-3 by Andrew Maries ©SovereignMusic, PO Box 356, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 8WP
Please note that this song too (although not from WGRG) is covered by CCL.

4. ELECTRONIC USE
For any electronic use (websites, videos, computer software etc.), even if it is non-commercial, we would also ask that you contact us prior to use with full details of the intended use.

5. BROADCASTS
For texts used in TV or Radio broadcasts, we would ask that you contact us prior to use with full details of the intended use. We would ask for a donation, if possible, and for a full acknowledgement of the source of the text/song to be mentioned. But please contact the WGRG office for further details and permission.

6. WGRG MATERIAL PUBLISHED ELSEWHERE
Some WGRG/John Bell songs are published in other publishers’ books only. One example is some of the songs from the “God comes tomorrow”-collection (GIA Publications, US). Although WGRG retains the copyright to the words and music, GIA owns the “form” of the music (eg. the typesetting) so no copies can be made of songs from such publications without permission from the publisher. But for requests regarding words only, or to print the music in a new publication, requests should still go to the WGRG office.

7. SONGS BY OTHERS, PUBLISHED IN WGRG BOOKS
Occasionally, WGRG publishes songs by other authors/composers. If ANY part of a song (text/music/arrangement) is copyright another person/organisation, you always need to apply for additional permission from them, both for non-commercial and commercial use. The copyright acknowledgement should be able to give you all the information you need, but if in doubt, or you need help to contact additional copyright holders, contact the WGRG office.

8. CONFUSED?
If in doubt about any of the points above, just contact us: Copyright Administrator, WGRG, 4th Floor, Savoy House, 140 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow G2 3DH, Scotland. (Tel: 0141 332 6343 Fax: 0141 332 1090 Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
We do appreciate all the calls and letters we get from people who do their best to credit our material in the best way, and send us donations. Now that we have joined CCL we hope this will simplify the copyright administration for us and many churches which regularly use our material. If you don’t have a CCL licence, don’t worry. These revised WGRG guidelines still apply to you and should hopefully hold most of the information you need.

Your attention to copyright matters helps to fund our work. Many thanks!

Outside the Safe Place

by Anne Muir
In 2004, the Iona Community became concerned that many of those who could bear witness to its early days were by then in their 70s or 80s. As a result, they commissioned an oral history project, so that their testimonies would not be lost. This book is based on the recordings of their stories.
