Living the Questions
Resourcing progressive Christians

An open-minded alternative to the Alpha Course

People know that, at its core, Christianity has something good to offer humanity. At the same time, many have a sense that they are alone in being a 'thinking' Christian and that 'salvaging' Christianity is a hopeless task. What is needed is a safe environment where people have permission to ask the questions they have always wanted to ask but have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic.

Living the Questions is a source of curriculum and media for both seekers and 'church alumni/ae' convinced that Christianity still has relevance in the 21st century. Providing a variety of flexible resources, Living the Questions can help people explore the future of Christianity and what a meaningful faith can look like in today's world.

For more information on the Living the Questions DVD-based curricula click here.

The Iona Community

cross

The Iona Community, was founded during the Depression years of the 1930s when George MacLeod took a group of trainee ministers and unemployed shipworkers from Glasgow’s Clydeside to the island of Iona to rebuild part of the ancient abbey. Intended as a sign of hope in dark times, it was also an experiment in living as a community that worked and worshipped together.

Over sixty years on, the Community is still committed to a spirituality of engagement and challenge and continues to thrive as a dispersed group of members, associates and friends from many walks of life based all over the UK and in many other countries.

Bridging the Gap Bridging the Gap, by John Harvey
First published in 1987, this book looks critically at the Church of Scotland’s failure to undertake a consistent, demanding and detailed analysis of the reasons why the poor are not anywhere near the church today, calling this failure not only surprising, but also disobedient and potentially disastrous.

Reinventing TheologyReinventing Theology as the People's Work
Ian M. Fraser, a member of the Iona Community, wrote Reinventing Theology as the People’s Work in 1980 for two specific conferences that were to take place in the 1980s. The Household of FaithThe Household of Faith by T. Ralph Morton
First published in 1951, this book had its origin in a discussion as to whether the prime determining factor in human social relations is economic, as claimed by the Marxist world, and acted on implicitly by most of the rest of the world. Ralph Morton therefore begins with a study of the teaching of the Bible on economic and social life and goes on to discuss the possibility that people of every generation are called to demonstrate a distinctive form of social living, just as the early Christians did. The author was Deputy Leader of the Iona Community from 1950 for 17 years.

Only one way leftOnly One Way Left by George F. MacLeod

Only One Way Left is based on a memorable series of the Cunningham Lectures delivered in 1954 by the founder of the Iona Community at New College, Edinburgh. Disturbed by the Church’s comparative failure to influence the crises of the mid-20th century, George MacLeod’s analysis was that it had forgotten both the unique centre of the Christian approach – that God became a human being – and the truth that the Christian faith can only be comprehended in a consciousness of total community. He claimed: ‘The great criticism of the Church today is that no one wants to persecute it, because there is nothing very much to persecute it about.’

The Twelve Together The Twelve Together by T. Ralph Morton
When Ralph Morton wrote The Twelve Together in the mid-1950s, it was in response to the need he perceived for an understanding of Jesus’s life with his disciples in order to inform a more appropriate pattern of church life in his own day …
Available in printed formats (e-book to be available later).
