Iona: Images and Reflections

(Book & e-book)

Photos of the island with words

Neil Paynter & David Coleman

Full-colour photographs of the Abbey, Iona's white sand beaches, the pilgrimage around the island, seabirds, highland cattle, tracks and roads, boats and nets, kitchen pots, footprints in the sand, cotton grass bending in the breeze, soaring wild geese - and people, living and working and worshipping on the island, and visiting as pilgrims, guests and day-trippers.

With accompanying short reflections, prayers, poems and stories.

The spring of machair and the sucking squelch of bog
High cairns
Low, wet patches of cottongrass
Falling asleep between two hills like in the hollow of God’s hand
and being woken up by cows.
A path.

No path.

A Wee Book of Iona Poems transspaser

A Wee Book of Iona Poems

(Book & e-book)

Kenneth Steven

These haiku-like poems arise out of Kenneth Steven’s perception of the Iona landscape. They have the sense of wonder, seeing, and being in the moment that many of us experience when spending time on this jewel-like island in a turquoise sea.

Iona has been Kenneth’s spiritual home since his childhood. He even learned to walk on one of the island’s beaches. He sometimes fears that there may be no more hidden corners to find, but there always are.

There is a beach
where globes of Baltic amber can be found:
hold them in the sun like honey.

Around a Thin Place transspaser

Around a Thin Place

An Iona pilgrimage guide

(Book & e-book)

Jane Bentley & Neil Paynter

The Iona Community runs a weekly pilgrimage around the island for those who visit, pausing for reflection at places of spiritual and historical significance, and at less obvious landmarks which offer inspiration for our daily lives and our engagement with the wider world.

This rich collection of readings, prayers, poems, photographs, songs, stories and reflections invites island visitors and armchair pilgrims alike to take a prayerful, perhaps life-changing, journey around what George MacLeod, the Founder of the Iona Community, described as a ‘thin place’ - only a tissue paper separating the material from the spiritual.

Lord of the silences –
speak to me:
in the blowing of the wind;
in the rustling of the grass;
in the sound of the sea;
in the beating of my heart;
in the stirring of my spirit –
speak, Lord.
I am listening.
