Advent Readings from Iona transspaser

Advent Readings from Iona

(Book & e-book)

Brian Woodcock & Jan Sutch Pickard

Celebrate Christmas with reflections and prayers for each day of Advent. This effective antidote to the commercialism of the festive season can be used for individual meditation or group worship. The authors are former Wardens of Iona Abbey and the MacLeod Centre on the Isle of Iona.

Christ of the cosmos, living Word,
come to heal and save.
Incognito, in our streets,
beneath the concrete,
between the cracks,
behind the curtains, within the dreams,
in ageing memories, in childhood wonder,
in secret ponds, in broken hearts,
in Bethlehem stable, still small voice,
Word of God, amongst us.

Hope Was Heard Singing

Resources for Advent

(Book & e-book)

Sally Foster-Fulton

Hope Was Heard Singing can be used as part of a daily discipline for Advent, or as a book to dip into. It is a collection for personal reflection, and a rich resource, from an original voice, for congregations and small groups searching for material relevant to the 21st century.

There are prayers, meditations, poems, a few wee plays thrown in for good measure and Bible readings on Advent themes. Much of the material was tried and tested at Dunblane Cathedral, where Sally was Associate Minister when she wrote this book.

Sally Foster-Fulton is Head of Christian Aid Scotland and former Convener of the Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland.

Daily devotions for Advent

(Book & e-book)

Thom M Shuman

In this collection of readings for the four weeks of Advent, Thom introduces us to, among others, Dusty the Church Dog, Mr Pete the Drum man, and to his son, Teddy, and wife, Bonnie.

In this collection Mary, the mother of Jesus, goes for a contemplative skate on a frozen pond where praises piggyback until her soul topples over, and John the Baptist tries to explain his purpose to a very perplexed Senator and chairman of the board. These are personal and universal, imaginative and biblically rooted reflections.

Thom M Shuman is the author of The Jesse Tree, The Soft Petals of Grace and a new book, Christmas Eve in the Diner, which will be published next week (Wild Goose). He lives in Columbus, Ohio where he serves as a transitional pastor. He is an Associate member of the Iona Community.

What Are You Waiting For? download transspaser

What Are You Waiting For? (PDF download)

A service for Advent

Dave Broom

Digital download: During Advent we wait, not for turkey and tinsel, mass consumerism and waste … but for the coming of Jesus Christ and for justice to be done: for the homeless to be sheltered, for war to be abolished, for the destruction of the environment to end.

We wait for God. But God also waits for us, and asks: ‘Well, what are you going to do about it all then? How are you, Christ’s disciples, going to make a difference in the world?' …

What will you do differently as a result of the past year?

How will you help the Kingdom come?

Dave Broom is a teacher and a former member of the Iona Community’s Resident Group on Iona, where he worked as Sacristan.

The Cloisters of Iona Abbey download transspaser

The Cloisters of Iona Abbey

(Book & PDF e-book)

Ewan Mathers

A new smaller-format edition of Ewan Mathers’ beautiful photographs depicting in detail the carvings of the restored cloisters of Iona Abbey, with text reflecting on the meaning of each design and information about the flora and fauna of the Isle of Iona and beyond, which most of the carvings represent. This use of symbols from the natural world reflects the close links of the early Celtic Christians with the land around them.

As a frequent visitor to Iona since childhood, Ewan observed the newly rebuilt cloisters being transformed over thirty years from rough pillars of fragile sandstone into a complete, cyclical, unified work of art. As an adult he began to look more closely at the carvings and from conversations with Chris Hall, the principal carver, to learn something of what they represent.

From Darkness to Eastering transspaser

From Darkness to Eastering

(Book and e-book)

Bonnie B Thurston

Reflective, prayerful poems about how, on a cosmic and a personal level, darkness gives way to light. The author reminds voyagers that ‘light shines in the darkness’, that darkness is required to perceive light – and that Easter means the light has come, life triumphs, and the promised Holy Spirit will empower us for growth: ‘eastering’ …

‘You are in skilled hands here, so let yourself be carried along, ready to experience delight, or be jarred into discomfort. Above all ponder, weigh, take time. For each poem comes out of the quiet depths of a person who is a fellow pilgrim, illuminating the familiar with her own God-given insight.’
