A note from Wild Goose

As the darkness of winter approaches for those of us in the northern hemisphere, we turn to the celebrations of the season with a new download for All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, and a reminder of our other resources for that festival. Thinking further ahead. we take another look at a great book which suggests an alternative view of December.

Doing December Differently transspaser

Doing December Differently

An alternative Christmas handbook

(Book and e-book)

Nicola Slee & Rosie Miles

This book explores how people of faith and goodwill might mark the midwinter season and the Christmas festival with integrity and simplicity. How can we include others and celebrate difference without putting us all under intolerable strain, or perpetuating false and oppressive myths of the ideal family life?

What rites, rituals and ceremonies might we use that are meaningful to us today to help us mark out the days and nights of this midwinter season?

How might we acknowledge our connections with family members, friends and others who are significant to us, in ways that are life-giving and joyful, rather than compulsive and draining?

In other words, how might we do December differently? In addressing such issues and questions, this book presents personal stories, reflections on the origins, diverse meanings and customs associated with Christmas, and liturgical and ritual resources that can be adapted and used in the home, in group gatherings and in church settings.

The unchristmas tree

The unchristmas tree has no lights
except what filters through its spaces

no tinsel
except its own astringent needles

no star
except those caught in its branches

no presents
except the gifting of itself

The unchristmas tree costs nothing at all
except the grace to notice where it grows

Rosie Miles and Nicola Slee

From Darkness to Eastering transspaser

From Darkness to Eastering

(Book and e-book)

Bonnie B Thurston

A book about how, on a cosmic and a personal level, darkness gives way to light. It does not sugar-coat the reality of darkness but is full of hope, reminding voyagers that ‘light shines in the darkness’, that darkness is required to perceive light – and that Easter means the light has come, life triumphs, and the promised Holy Spirit will empower us for growth: ‘eastering’ …

These reflective, prayerful poems are ‘a ticket and passport for a spiritual journey’ and can be used in a daily discipline or with groups.

Having resigned a professorship and chair in New Testament studies, Bonnie Thurston now lives quietly as a solitary near Wheeling, West Virginia, USA, working as a spiritual director and retreat leader and volunteering in a food bank. She is the author of over 20 books.

‘You are in skilled hands here, so let yourself be carried along, ready to experience delight, or be jarred into discomfort. Above all ponder, weigh, take time. For each poem comes out of the quiet depths of a person who is a fellow pilgrim, illuminating the familiar with her own God-given insight.’
