A note from Wild Goose

Unusually for us at this time of year, we are publishing a new book for Lent and Easter this week. It's another beautiful, full-colour sequence of verbal and visual prayers from Ann Gerondelis. May we suggest that it would make a great Christmas present, especially as Easter is so early next year?

We also have a late addition to our collection of Remembrance Sunday resources — this time by Roddy Cowie.

Open Our Hearts

Daily prayers for Lent and Holy Week

(Book & e-book)

Ann Gerondelis

Open Our Hearts is a series of Bible readings, prayers and colour images for each day of Lent and Holy Week, to invite reflection, contemplation and action in the world.

Ann’s images are icon-like in their depth and focus; her prayers are poetic and prophetic.

Follow this special and very original book through Lent and Holy Week to open up space to meet God anew; and to open our hearts to God’s all-inclusive love and the call to feed the hungry, work for peace and build communities of love.

Ann Gerondelis is an author, architect and academic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the founder of Sketch Prayers Studio, exploring questions regarding the role of sacred communities and the power of images and image-making in shaping perceptions of God’s holy imagination. Ann is a Friend of the Iona Community. This publication follows her first book, Open Our Eyes, Daily Prayers for Advent.

Books for Advent

Disturbing Complacency

Preparing for Christmas

Lisa Bodenheim

Readings for the four weeks of Advent.

Disturbing Complacency does not advocate a ‘cosy’ view of Christmas but rather urges people to use this season to address some of the most important issues of our time. To do so the author makes creative use of quotes from other sources, interspersed with her own perspective on the subjects under consideration.

Lisa Bodenheim, a minister of the United Church of Christ and an Associate of the Iona Community, writes: Let us prepare for the birth of Christ by stretching our faith and disturbing our comfort. Let us ruffle our complacency and develop awareness, a courageous spirit and a security that comes from a deep-rooted faith.

A Star-Filled Grace

Worship and prayer resources for Advent, Christmas & Epiphany

(Book & e-book)

Rachel Mann

A Star-Filled Grace offers resources on beloved Advent and Christmas themes for churches, ministers, study groups and individuals at a time when there is a genuine interest in fresh ways of telling the Christmas stories.

In poetry, liturgy and narrative, Rachel Mann questions the cosy and sentimental view of the festive season and takes seriously the idea that God in Christ is born as a vulnerable outsider who transforms the world in radical ways.

Intended to be usable in a wide range of liturgical and study contexts, this book revisits biblical voices, characters and stories with a sophistication and simplicity that speaks to readers from a diversity of theological and spiritual perspectives.

As Rachel Mann writes, ‘At the centre of the Christmas story is a God who disturbs our concepts of power, authority and status. A young girl becomes the bearer of God and speaks with extraordinary authority. God is incarnated not in the halls of power but among peasants and nobodies. In the Christmas stories, meaning and possibility are constantly played with; identity is reworked and redefined.’

Daily readings for Advent

(Book & e-book)

Thom M Shuman

Reflections for the season of Advent based on those people who might only be mentioned once in the Bible (in the lineages in Matthew and Luke) — the women, the prophets, the exiles who, while not linked to Jesus genetically, nevertheless passed on their ‘spiritual DNA’ to him and to us.
