Fig Trees and Furnaces

Biblical stories, scripts and reflections – Esther to Maccabees

(Book & e-book)

Ruth Burgess

Fig Trees and Furnaces, based on the biblical books from Esther to Maccabees, is a collection of stories, scripts and reflections written by Iona Community members, associates, friends and others. It is a companion volume to Olives and Obligations, which is based on the books from Genesis to Nehemiah.

There are some beautiful stories in the Bible and there are some hideous stories as well. What do we do with them?

Do we tell them in Sunday school? Do we omit them from the lectionary? Do we try to explain them?

Stories are important.

Stories are powerful.

Teach us, God, to read the Bible
with wisdom and integrity.
Tell us, in the light and in the darkness,
the stories we need to hear.

What Are You Waiting For?(PDF download)

A service for Advent

Dave Broom

Digital download: During Advent we wait, not for turkey and tinsel, mass consumerism and waste … but for the coming of Jesus Christ and for justice to be done: for the homeless to be sheltered, for war to be abolished, for the destruction of the environment to end.

We wait for God. But God also waits for us, and asks: ‘Well, what are you going to do about it all then? How are you, Christ’s disciples, going to make a difference in the world?' …

Iona: A Map

Flat version – can be used as a poster

The Iona Community

‘I sometimes take this map out – when I’ve been away from Iona for far too long a time – and read it like a poetry book: I gaze at the beautiful artwork and place names: ‘Sacred hollow’, ‘The old man’s hill’, ‘Port of the coracle’ ‘Bay at the back of the ocean’, ‘White strand of the monks’, ‘Port of black stones’, ‘The pigeons’ cave’ … Reading the map takes me back to all the magical and life-changing times I’ve had on Iona. It somehow helps me to find myself again and to rekindle the wonder.’

Supplied rolled in a cardboard mailing tube.
