Digital download: A litany for walking the streets of a city, taken from the book Wild Goose Chase, by Annie Heppenstall.
The author says, ‘The litany arose out of a desire within our church community to surround the area with prayer following a street shooting. So a group began to meet to walk quietly around the area, stopping at significant places to pray, to sing and to light candles. As an extension to this, as Christmas time approached, some of us felt moved to take our prayer-walking into the city centre. This litany is based on the one we used that evening. Since that time I have prayer-walked the city quite often, moved by the vulnerability of ordinary people going about their business, trusting in peace. Current world events show us the true fragility of the structures we have built up and the systems in which we place so much confidence … and have also exacerbated the sense of mistrust of and hostility against some sectors of our society, at a time when trust and mutual understanding are so important.’
